Professor Shane Murray

Professor Shane Murray is Director of the AHURI Swinburne-Monash Research Centre at Monash University, Foundation Professor of Architecture, and Dean of the Faculty of Art Design & Architecture, Monash University. He was Professor of Architectural Design and Director of the Architecture Program at RMIT University prior to joining Monash. Shane holds a BArch from the University of Melbourne and a PhD in Architecture from RMIT and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.

Shane’s research interests are in exploring how architectural design can contribute to the intensification of the middle suburbs. His current research is in the development of affordable and sustainable medium density, infill housing at the scale of precinct. His ongoing project ‘Designing Affordable and Sustainable Housing’ focuses on issues of affordability and sustainability through a design-led process. In 2010 he worked on the AHURI Investigative Panel Towards a new development model for housing regeneration in greyfield precincts and Intensifying places: transit-oriented design for resilient Australian cities, which is a three-year ARC Linkage project. A house that he co-designed for the general market was recently built as a demonstration project for Habitat 21, and was awarded the 2011 Architecture Award - Small Project Architecture at the Victorian RAIA awards.
