24-Nov 2003 National Housing Conference tackles tough issues

Monday 24 November 2003

In the next two decades, Australia will need to tackle the tough issues of housing affordability, environmentally sustainable housing and the impacts of an ageing population on housing needs.

These are among the issues being debated at the National Housing Conference 2003, being held in Adelaide from November 26-28. The conference, which brings together more than 1000 delegates from among the housing policy community, housing workers and academics, is this year focused on the future of Australia’s housing system.

At a time of booming housing prices, and increasing housing affordability problems for first-home buyers, NHC2003 Housing Futures will examine how other countries have tackled the problem of making housing more affordable. It will also consider some of the options available for Australia.

The conference will also look at Australia’s changing demographic profile and how the ageing baby-boomer generation will impact on the housing market.  And it will consider Australia’s multi-billion dollar housing assistance programs – their effectiveness in an environment of high housing prices and different regional labour markets.

Other key issues being addressed are housing design – for bushfire-prone areas, for example – better housing for Indigenous Australians, and how we make our homes and cities more environmentally, socially and financially sustainable for the long-term.
