New City Deal to boost Darwin

2 June 2016

The Australian and Northern Territory Governments have announced they will work together to create a City Deal for Darwin that will drive investment, jobs and improve liveability for communities in the region.

Through the new City Deal, the Commonwealth, Territory and local governments will collaborate to transform Darwin into a world-class tropical tourist and cultural destination. The Deal will support innovative private and public sector infrastructure investments across all three levels of government; create jobs by supporting skills and industry development particularly in defence and agribusiness; improve housing affordability; and improve the liveability, amenity and attractiveness of the city centre.

The Northern Territory is the fourth jurisdiction to create a City Deal with the Commonwealth.

The upcoming AHURI national conference, Affordability and liveability in our cities, to be held in Melbourne on Thursday 29 June, will feature a key session on ‘City Deals and affordable housing’. This session will provide an overview of the UK City Deals, an analysis of the new Australian model and a panel discussion featuring representatives from the three tiers of government and the private sector.
