Summary

The Miller foyer model (Live 'n Learn Campus) has been successful in providing secure accommodation to young people and the opportunity for independent living. Once this is achieved, residents are able to concentrate on their education and training needs, based on goals outlined in an Action Plan agreed with Campus Management.

Young people facing or experiencing homelessness in rural Australia have very different experiences to their urban contemporaries. The Foyer model is one response that could help young rural people establish themselves, without relocating them to cities away from their support networks.

Description

This project was a longitudinal study of the development of the pilot Miller Foyer which is being developed in Liverpool by the South West Sydney Region of the NSW Department of Housing. This scheme represented the first attempt by any social housing agency to develop a Foyer in Australia and, as such represents a pilot for a type of accommodation for homeless and vulnerable youth that could be replicated widely across Australia. The project worked with the Department's Foyer team to monitor the development of the Foyer from its early stages into management and into the first year of operation to assess the impact on the first tranche of residents, providing feedback to the Department and then to complete a final report and best practice document summarising the pilot study to wider dissemination.
