Housing insecurity

Summary

'Housing insecurity' refers to high levels of residential mobility, as well as other dimensions of insecurity such as lack of control over housing and uncertainty about future housing circumstances. The aim of this project is to investigate the extent, and dimensions, of 'housing insecurity' as a concept.

Description

The findings will provide detailed data on how households experience housing insecurity, and the extent of such insecurity, that will assist State and Territory housing authorities considering 'security of tenure' policy reform and housing management practices. The findings will indicate the type and extent of residential mobility experienced by renters and implications will assist policy makers in dealing with 'churn' and the associated tenancy and asset management costs. They will also inform debate around the desirability/ practicality of longer leases in private rental housing and cross-tenure housing options, e.g. shared equity, which may provide additional security.
