Home life, work and housing decisions: a qualitative analysis

In this report, we present the findings of qualitative research which investigates the linkages between government housing assistance and economic participation in Australia. 'Housing assistance' refers to government policy settings, regulatory regimes and programs which are intended to assist people to access and remain in affordable, adequate and appropriate housing. In particular, we focus on demand subsidies for private renters (Rent Assistance) and supply subsidy programs such as public and community rental housing. 'Economic participation' is a multi-dimensional concept that includes labour force participation (full-time or part-time employment and unemployment), participation in education or training programs (full-time or part-time), and participation in unpaid, voluntary work of various types.

Housing affordability and financial stress

The purpose of this report is to provide a statistical analysis of the factors that contribute to financial stress. The key research question analysed is whether high housing costs contribute to financial stress. The report uses data collected by Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for the 2003-04 Household Expenditure Survey (HES) to undertake this analysis.

Housing affordability and the economy: A review of macroeconomic impacts and policy issues

National Research Venture - Housing Affordability for Lower-Income Australians
The focus of this report is on the key economic effects of problems associated with housing affordability. The basic aim is to provide a broader-than-normal rationale for, and a basis on which to develop, policies designed to improve affordability outcomes. Housing affordability is here considered in relation to the operation of the national and regional economies and not merely as a question of social policy.

Housing affordability and the economy: A review of labour market impacts and policy issues

This report focuses on the issue of (mis)match between labour and housing markets in large, globally connected cities in the current era of globalisation. Inevitably, attention in the Australian context is directed towards Sydney and Melbourne. The basic argument draws on the urban analyses of theorists like Sassen, Fainstein and Marcuse who see the processes of globalisation impacting very unevenly across and within countries and who point to the primary role of particular cities and within them, particular regions, as the locus of dynamic economic growth.
