Dr Iain Butterworth

Dr Iain Butterworth Iain has more than 25 years’ experience in a range of sectors, including community development, government, higher education and consulting.

Iain has particular expertise in the World Health Organisation’s Healthy Cities and Communities approach; population health; liveability policy research, measurement and implementation; and university-community engagement.

Prior to joining AHURI, Iain was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, helped establish Deakin University’s interdisciplinary post-graduate planning degree, and supported the university's community engagement agenda. He co-led the formal Partnership between Deakin University and the Victorian Department of Human Services.

More recently, Iain worked with the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services in a range of roles, including driving the development of the Place, Health, and Liveability policy research partnership with the University of Melbourne.   The Liveability research output and resources have had considerable policy impact and uptake by state and local government.

Iain is currently National President of the Australian Fulbright Alumni Association, and an Urban Scholar with the UN Global Compact – Cities Programme.
