Peter Newton

Peter is Professor of Sustainable Urbanism at Swinburne University’s Centre for Urban Transitions and will provide an overview of a new development model emerging for medium density precinct scale infill redevelopment of greyfield suburbs.

He is a Research Professor in the area of sustainable built environments and has led ARC Discovery Projects on Sustainable Consumption as well as Green Economy Transition and AHURI and CRC SI projects on urban (greyfields) regeneration.

Peter is also a Research Leader in the Cooperative Research Centre for Low Carbon Living, where he has researched and published on decarbonisation of housing, transport and precincts in cities. He is a research partner in the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) and the Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre (SBEnrc), and since 2013 has been a member of the Research Advisory Committee of the CRC for Water Sensitive Cities and a member of the Board of the Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network.

Prior to joining Swinburne, Peter was Chief Research Scientist at CSIRO. He is the author or editor of more than 20 books on cities, planning, and sustainability and in 2014 was elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.
