National Homelessness Conference 2018

Peter Lewis

Executive Director, Essential Media

Peter Lewis Peter has been behind some of the biggest gains in positive social change in Australia over the past decade. He is responsible for the ground-breaking Every Australian Counts campaign, which gave rise to the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Peter worked closely with Rosie Batty to establish the Luke Batty Foundation, which has effectively campaigned for increased funding to domestic violence services with Essential’s support. Peter’s recent campaigning successes also include improving the affordability of childcare by mobilising parents and childcare workers to successfully lobby the federal Parliament. He is currently working with a coalition of housing groups to establish a campaign to address the national housing affordability crisis.

Peter is one of Australia’s foremost political commentators with specialist understanding of the progressive movement, its challenges and opportunities. He worked as a journalist for The Daily Telegraph and as a Ministerial adviser, before establishing his own consultancy. Peter works with the Essential Research team to produce the Essential Report, a fortnightly national poll, which tracks Australians’ views on key political, economic and social issues. He writes a regular column for The Guardian that dissects the poll and its political consequences. Peter regularly shares his insights on the Guardian and various talkback radio programs. Peter is also the author of three books, two on the future of work, the other on AFL.
