The upcoming AHURI Discussion Series focussing on the ‘Future of renting: Opportunities and challenges’ will take an in-depth look at the rental market in South Australia. The event is timely in the light of findings detailed in the recent 2019 Anglicare Rental Affordability Snapshot. The Snapshot reveals that of 2,710 properties advertised for rent in and around Adelaide in March 2019, only 72 were affordable for a couple on the Age Pension; 45 were affordable for a couple on Newstart with two children; and just 12 for a single person on the Disability Support Pension.

Across Australia there is a growing awareness of a need to improve the housing experience for tenants and ensure greater standards of service provision.

The Discussion Series is based on findings from the AHURI Inquiry into the future of the private rental market, which analysed trends in private rental sector (PRS) including financing and provision; balancing the rights of housing consumers and housing providers; and how digital technology is reshaping PRS access and management. The Adelaide Discussion event will explore how policy makers, real estate professionals, tenants and the community sector might best respond to these changes, as well as considering factors such as the impact of build-to-rent models.

Across Australia there is a growing awareness of a need to improve the housing experience for tenants and ensure greater standards of service provision.

Professor Kath Hulse from Swinburne University of Technology will lead the presentation in Adelaide, and will join with a panel of thought leaders to discuss these questions and to consider key opportunities and challenges.

Panel members include Ms Erin Turner, Director Campaigns and Communications at Choice; Ms Michelle Gegenhuber, General Manager Housing and Homelessness, Anglicare SA; and Mr Leigh Warner, National Director Research at JLL (a leading, global professional services and investment management firm specialising in real estate).

The Adelaide AHURI Discussion Series will be on 11 June 2019 at the Art Gallery of South Australia, North Terrace, Adelaide.
