SA Government releases 10-year housing strategy

AHURI research on future housing demand supported the development of the plan

10 December 2019

The South Australian Government has announced the ‘Our Housing Future 2020–2030’ Strategy, a 10-year plan for a better housing future for South Australia.

This plan is underpinned by recent AHURI research, ‘Audit of South Australia’s current housing assets and mapping of future demand’, undertaken for the State Government. This research provided an insight into the state’s current housing assets, and likely future demand together with trends and challenges facing the SA housing system.

The AHURI research found that while there were around 44,000 households in social housing in 2018, there were also 46,500 lower income households in private rental stress, that is, paying more than 30 per cent of their income on housing.

The ‘Our Housing Future 2020–2030’ is focussed on five key strategies:

Strategy 1 – Create conditions for a well-functioning housing market that meets the housing needs of all South Australians by attracting investment back to the industry and creates a progressive housing and planning environment.

Strategy 2 – Reduce housing stress through 20,000 affordable housing solutions made available over the next 10 years.

Strategy 3 – Create housing pathways to enable people to access housing and services as their needs change. A key factor will be facilitating home ownership and/or private rental for those social housing tenants able to take up these opportunities, in turn opening up access to more people on the social housing register.

Strategy 4 – Prevent and reduce homelessness through targeted and tailored responses, particularly by providing Housing First approaches with targeted and tailored support.

Strategy 5 – Modernise the social housing system and reposition it for success by supporting tenants transition towards self-sufficiency and independence, which in turn will allow more people to be assisted into tenancies, creating a much more equitable system. This support will be underpinned by initiatives such as increasing employment and training opportunities, reviewing eligibility and allocations, and providing clearer expectations for tenants including appropriate behaviour.

The ‘Our Housing Future 2020–2030’ Strategy is online at the SA Housing Authority.
