1 July 2019

Senator Malarndirri McCarthy

Senator Malarndirri McCarthy will give the opening keynote address on day two of the National Housing Conference.

Malarndirri McCarthy has been a Senator for the Northern Territory since 2016. She is a Yanyuwa woman from Borroloola in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Before announcing her candidacy for the Senate, Malarndirri was a senior presenter and journalist for NITV News and host of Week in Review.

From 2005–2012, Malarndirri represented the people of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory Parliament. She was a Northern Territory Minister from 2008-2012 and held numerous portfolios including Children & Families, Indigenous & Regional Development, Women, Tourism and Local Government.

Malarndirri's keynote will provide insight into the political and social landscape of Indigenous Australians in the Northern Territory. Her perspective complements that of First Nation Canadian speaker Margaret Pfoh who will highlight the successes and methods of expanding Indigenous housing programs in Canada.
