AHURI Discussion Series revisits ‘The Stack’ in Sydney

Following the success of the Private Sector involvement in social and affordable housing panel discussion and networking event in Melbourne earlier in June, our Sydney event on 15 June did not disappoint.

People from across the housing sector, including policymakers, community housing providers, investors, developers, advocates and consultancies, met to be part of a lively panel discussion exploring how private industry and the for purpose sector can best partner to deliver much needed social and affordable housing outcomes, while meeting their own objectives and obligations.

The panel brought together leads of three exciting projects that have delivered, or are in the process of delivering, thousands of social and affordable dwellings in NSW right now, including a mixed use affordable housing redevelopment by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in Redfern, the Pemulwuy project; affordable key worker housing investment in Westmead and Paramatta; and Australia’s largest social and affordable housing renewal project, the Ivanhoe Estate. Discussion included evidence drawn from research, practical insights on the ground, and an exploration of the financial ‘Stack’ needed to make these kinds of projects both viable and competitive against other asset categories for those who are delivering them.

The discussion was followed up by a welcome return to in-person networking by panel and participants alike. The slides for each event (Melbourne and Sydney) are now available.
