Dr Alexa Gower
Research Program Manager
Alexa brings a rare depth of perspective to her role, having worked across the full spectrum of housing stakeholders, from the building industry and government to the community sector. Her expertise spans urban design, apartment liveability, energy efficiency, planning regulation and digitisation of the planning system.
During her career she spent five years as an architect specialising in residential high-rise developments in Melbourne's Docklands precinct. This experience started her interest in housing policy, and she has worked with multiple state governments, including leading analysis of Victoria’s Homelessness to Home program, and advising the Victoria and Australian Capital Territory Governments on apartment standards. She has also taught postgraduate courses in Architecture, urban planning, policy and design at RMIT, Melbourne University and Monash University.
Alexa first encountered AHURI as a scholarship recipient during her PhD, returning later to join the Professional Services team as a Senior Researcher. Much of her work has been with NGOs and community organisations, focused upon improving outcomes for those at-risk of experiencing homelessness and First Nations people. A notable example is her partnership with the Queenslanders with Disability Network to expand inclusive housing options.
As Research Program Manager, Alexa draws on her cross-sector experience to ensure research is relevant, practical and actionable.
