Overcoming constraints on Australia's housing construction

For over four decades, detached housing completions have barely moved. Apartments are taking longer to build, and defect rates remain unacceptably high. Yet until now, no holistic investigation into what's constraining home building rates and quality has been undertaken.

The result is a sector where entrenched systemic barriers suppress output, and market volatility poses long-term risk to builders, construction rates and quality.

This webinar unpacks new AHURI research from the Final Inquiry Report: Overcoming construction constraints for the supply of new detached and high-rise housing.

The discussion will explore the key constraints on housing construction across Australia, address the central part volatility plays in reducing output, and explore eight interconnected policy development options to improve sector productivity.

Lead author, Associate Professor Dr Andrea Sharam, RMIT University, will discuss the key findings of the Inquiry with Rob Sobyra, General Manager Research and Strategy, at Build Skills Australia, facilitated by Dr Rachel Trigg, AHURI.

Who should attend: Anyone shaping or implementing policy relating to housing construction, working in the sector, or interested in improving the sector’s productivity.
