Trajectories: the interplay between mental health and housing pathways
Description: Trajectories is a national study that will develop a clearer understanding of the relationships between the housing and mental health pathways of people with mental health issues, in order to identify potential points of practical intervention and key issues for system improvement.

Effective downsizing options for older Australians
Description: This research examined the extent to which downsizing forms part of older Australians’ housing preferences, the actual and perceived benefits of moving as well as the availability of downsize housing options. The research proposes a number of policy strategies for delivering housing alternatives to meet older Australians’ downsizing aspirations.

Understanding the experience of social housing pathways
Description: This study explores the ways households experience pathways into, within and out of the Australian social housing system. Managing social housing waiting lists and encouraging people to exit social housing is a key concern for policy-makers, however housing market failure in Australia is such that the private rental market is largely inaccessible, unaffordable and insecure for households on low incomes.

The supply of affordable private rental housing in Australian cities: short-term and longer-term changes
Description: This research charts the changes in the supply of affordable and available private rental housing for lower income households between 2011 and 2016, and is the latest in a series of projects detailing affordable rental housing supply every five years since 1996 using Census data. There is strong evidence of structural change in the private rental market, with an increase in privately rented dwellings affordable by Q3–Q5 households, while the market is not supplying sufficient rental properties for lower income Q1 and Q2 households.

An effective homelessness services system for older Australians
Description: This study investigated the issues affecting older Australians who are experiencing or facing homelessness including the capacity to access Specialist Homeless Services and other government supports, and potential ways to escape homelessness for older people. The research also considered appropriate, successful international practices for older people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Moving, downsizing and housing equity consumption choices of older Australians
Description: This study analyses current geographic mobility and downsizing behaviours among Australians aged over 55, and considers the barriers to, and consequences of downsizing. Retired Australians tend to retain high levels of housing wealth (rising to 49% of assets for homeowners aged 75+) and most choose not to downsize, either by moving to a smaller dwelling or a less-expensive home.

Improving housing and service responses to domestic and family violence for Indigenous individuals and families
Description: This study investigated the needs of Indigenous women and children who are severely over-represented in rates of domestic and family violence (DFV). Developing culturally appropriate responses to Indigenous DFV and improving integration between housing and DFV and child protection services should reduce rates of Indigenous women's injury and death, as well as rates of Indigenous children's out-of-home care.

Mortgage stress and precarious home ownership: implications for older Australians
Description: This research investigated the growing numbers of middle aged and older Australians who are carrying mortgage debt into retirement and paying off higher levels of debt relative to house values and income. Between 1987 and 2015, mortgage debt among older mortgagors increased by 600 per cent (from $27,000 to over $185,000). These trends have significant consequences for older Australians’ wellbeing, retirement wealth management and government incomes policy and housing assistance programs.

Young Australians and the housing aspirations gap
Description: This research investigated the short and longer term housing aspirations and the housing aspirations gap among ‘emerging adults’ aged 18–24 years and ‘early adults’ aged 25–34 years in order to better understand how their aspirations are linked to a ‘broader life project’ across areas such as education, employment and family formation.
