New National Urban Policy open for consultation

12 Jun 2024

AHURI welcomes increasing attention by the Australian government on urban policy. The Federal Government has been working with the Urban Policy Forum to develop a comprehensive and targeted National Urban Policy, and is now inviting submissions and feedback from organisations and individuals.

The aim of the Policy is that ‘government, industry and community can work together to improve our cities and suburbs, both now and for future generations’ and that it will help to make Australia’s ‘urban environment more liveable, equitable, productive, sustainable and resilient.’

The Government issued a draft National Urban Policy in May (2024), developed in partnership with state and territory governments, and has asked the community to comment on the draft and to present further directions and targets that the Policy might consider.

Of particular note, the consultation paper outlines a number of principles for urban policy, including Improving the evidence base will underpin urban innovation, which acknowledges the importance of research and evaluation in providing evidence of driving improvement and innovation in our cities.

People are invited to have their say via the Australian Government website, where the draft National Urban Policy is also available to be downloaded.

Submissions to the National Urban Policy close on 3 July 2024.
