Addressing First Nations housing disadvantage: a blueprint for action  

An estimated 45,700 low-income Indigenous households had unmet housing needs in 2021 – equivalent to one in every eight and almost double the rate for all Australians. Initiatives intended to improve Indigenous housing are flagging, and housing systems are fragmented across federal, state and territory levels.  

The result is a system in need of a unified approach, where governments are held accountable, investment in Indigenous social housing is increased, and First Nations people have more pathways to suitable and affordable homes.

This webinar unpacks the findings and recommendations from the AHURI-funded Inquiry into developing a long-term governance and resource framework for sustainable and effective Indigenous housing.

The discussion will explore the drivers of housing disadvantage among First Nations people, address how systems and initiatives intended to improve Indigenous housing are falling short, and delve into how the proposed strategy framework creates a blueprint for action.

Inquiry lead, Associate Professor Megan Moskos, Adelaide University, will discuss the key findings of the Inquiry with Dr Vivienne Milligan, Honorary Professor at University of New South Wales, and facilitated by Shaun Middlebrook, AHURI’s Principal First Nations Adviser.
