New research from AHURI finds that Australia’s homelessness services are overwhelmingly unable to meet client demand and that additional funding models are needed to address the critical unmet need for housing and homelessness services.

In an exciting first, AHURI and researchers from University of NSW, RMIT University, University of Tasmania and Swinburne University have released findings from the AHURI Inquiry ‘Affordable housing industry capacity’ in an easy-to-understand visual report. The research advances our understanding of Australia’s affordable housing industry and its capacity to expand.

The Australian Government’s City Deals are a way for governments, industry and local communities to ‘develop collective plans for growth and commit to the actions, investments, reforms and governance needed to implement them.’ By bringing together all levels of government, the private sector and the community, City Deals aim to provide a coordinated investment plan for capital cities and urban regions.

AHURI Executive Director Dr Ian Winter has been invited by the Australian Government to join a Cities Reference Group to help advise Government on cities policy. Dr Winter joins experts from property, planning, infrastructure, architecture, local government and academia on the specialist reference group.

Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison delivered an hour-long pre-budget address on housing affordability hosted by AHURI at the State Library in Melbourne on Monday 10 April. The speech focused not only on affordability challenges to do with home ownership, but also the difficulties faced by Australians in the rental market, particularly those in social and affordable housing.
