Dr Tom Alves

Managing Director (Acting)

Tom Alves

As Managing Director, Tom leads development of the national housing research agenda and oversees delivery of the National Housing Research Program, producing a policy evidence base on housing, homelessness and urban issues that is recognised around the world.

Tom steps up from six years leading AHURI's Professional Services division, during which time he worked closely with governments and other stakeholders across the country to lead research that has helped shape real policy outcomes. This includes the NSW Government adopting a statewide Housing First approach to homelessness, and Queensland committing to build 53,500 social and community homes by 2044.

Tom's career spans the full spectrum of housing and building — from an early career working in architectural practices, to lecturing on property and construction and housing policy, to crafting strategic government policy and design standards at the Victoria Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Tom has a PhD in Housing and Urban Studies and has previously been a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne and a Senior Lecturer at RMIT University.
