Australia is a highly urbanised nation. As we move into the 2020s, our cities are facing new challenges.
Flows of people, information, goods and services have accelerated, while the question of how our cities relate to their natural environments has also come into sharper focus. Australia’s policy and practical responses need to be informed by a sound evidence base.
AHURI has delivered the National Housing Research Program for twenty years, gaining international recognition for the quality and depth of Australian housing research, and enhancing Australia’s reputation for informed policy decision-making. It is time for a similar platform to support coordinated, policy-focused, Australian research into cities and urban issues.

This research examines the role of local government engagement and coordination in 21st century Australian metropolitan governance. It focusses on the role of local governments in cooperation with one another, the state governments and other actors at the metropolitan scale.

New housing supply, population growth and access to social infrastructure
This research tests the usefulness of newly available datasets to inform the planning of social and community infrastructure in rapidly growing areas of Australian cities. It focusses on greenfield areas of Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth to demonstrate data sources and methods that can be replicated in other locations.

This research explores how Australian urban transport programs and policies are responding to changes in transport technology, travel patterns, environmental imperatives and spatial development dynamics in order to offer guidance about future directions and options, and seeks to identify potential policy directions for Australia’s cities and policy arrangements.
