Hidden costs: measuring the real affordability of housing
Most of the trade-offs lower-income households make to afford their housing costs are not accounted for in the housing affordability measurements used by policy makers, according to new AHURI research. As a result housing can appear affordable even though it is of such poor quality it affects people’s health, is expensive to heat and cool, or it is located far from employment, with higher commuting costs.
What should be considered in measuring the real affordability of a home?
This webinar will explore new AHURI research findings on factors that should be included when considering what makes a home genuinely affordable. Discussion will look at how contemporary housing affordability measures could be extended to consider energy efficiency (heating and cooling costs), location (transport costs and location disadvantage), and building quality (health and maintenance costs).
Who should attend: Anyone shaping or implementing policy for housing affordability, or anyone investing in, designing and delivering affordable homes.
