Infrastructure Australia recognises social housing as key infrastructure

Audit includes a necessary focus on social housing

23 Aug 2019

Infrastructure Australia has released the Australian Infrastructure Audit 2019, which, for the first time, has expanded to cover the challenges and opportunities in providing Australia’s social infrastructure. As part of this new development, the Audit includes a necessary focus on social housing as an important part of social infrastructure.

AHURI welcomes the inclusion of social housing in the Audit, and that, in considering the implications for housing and social housing, has drawn from AHURI research. AHURI’s enhanced commitment to cities research through the Cities Research Agenda will bring further understandings and a broader evidence-base to the sectors highlighted in the Audit.

Findings from the 2019 Audit will inform the initiatives and projects in the annual Infrastructure Priority List and reforms in the Australian Infrastructure Plan, to be released in 2021. These documents will guide the future of infrastructure reform in Australia.

AHURI is looking forward to working with Infrastructure Australia to further develop responses to the issues and challenges raised in the Audit about how to best integrate cities, housing and the broader urban environment.
